star and Newsnight
presenter Victoria Derbyshire has opened up about how she secretly married her
partner Mark Sandell after her successful breast cancer treatment.
The TV host spoke to
Woman & Home magazine about her treatment, which consisted of six sessions
of chemotherapy and 30 sessions of radiotherapy over 301 days. She explained
she wanted to celebrate by tying the knot.
"Mark totally
stepped up," she said. "He was incredible. He
did everything to look after me and the boys. We got married after I got the
all-clear.
"We wanted to have
a massive party and celebrate with our boys, Mark's daughter – my stepdaughter,
Lizzie – and with our family and friends. It was amazing."
Victoria — who took
part in the 2020 series of the ITV reality show, the first of two to take place
in North Wales rather than Australia — and opened up about her diagnosis and
how it drove a wedge between her and Mark at first, as they were too scared to
talk to each other.
"We could barely
speak, you know. We could barely speak to each other. We are talkers, we are
open, we are you know, and we just had no words because honestly all I was
thinking was I'm going to die. Seriously, I'm going to die," she
explained.
"And then, I
thought I'm not going to see my boys grow up, I'm not going to grow old with
Mark, I mean it was just, I just thought my luck's run out, you know."
Victoria and Mark share
two sons, 18-year-old Oliver and 15-year-old Joe.
