Motorist kills five dancers during New Year party

Five persons have been confirmed killed and four others in critical condition after a yet-to-be-identified motorist rammed into dancers during a New Year party organised by some friends at Akinmori community, in the Afijio Local Government area of Oyo State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that trouble started when one of the organisers was tongue-lashed by his colleagues for driving recklessly into the party venue.

This, according to an eyewitness, did not go down well with the man and he later entered his car with annoyance.

A source said, “The young man drove into the venue of the party at top speed and was scolded by his friends who were already at the party.

“After the intervention of some elders, the young man entered his car reluctantly. Still angry at the confrontation, he vowed to spill blood. Then he started the car and zoomed into the dancing friends, knocking down over 10 people.”

Investigations by our correspondent, however, revealed that three of his friends, who were in the car at the time of the event, were arrested after the driver fled the scene.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, confirmed the incident, adding that an investigation had commenced.

Augustine Eguavoen Did A Fine Job As Super Eagles Coach

By now it is no news to any Nigerian sports fan, that Augustin Eguavoen and his entire team have been relieved of their duties at the helm of affairs of the Nigerian National team. Most Nigerians are happy with this development, with some claiming that his immediate predecessor, Gernot Rohr would have delivered better results. However, a simple analysis of events will clearly demonstrate that Eguavoen did a fine enough job given the circumstances. I will attempt to undertake this analysis by demonstrating, first that Eguavoen has a better record than one might realize, and secondly by comparing the performance of his Super Eagles with that of Afcon winners, Senegal, and runners-up Egypt. When Gernot Rohr was sacked a few weeks to the Afcon, knowledgeable sportspersons decried the move, citing the difficulty any new coach would face in setting up the team to play to his own patterns. In analyzing Eguavoen, therefore, it must first be understood that the new boss was operating unde...
