Ex-PUNCH MD, Osinubi, gets Lifetime Achievement Award

The immediate past Managing Director of Punch Nigeria Limited, Mr Ademola Osinubi, will receive the 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award at the 31st edition of the annual Diamond Awards for Media Excellence holding in Lagos on Sunday.

Osinubi retired from the services of Punch Nigeria on April 30, 2022, after a distinguished career as the leader of the country’s most successful newspaper company.

A former editor of The PUNCHSaturday PUNCH and Sunday PUNCH, Osinubi was general manager before he was appointed managing director/editor-in-chief. He had an outstanding career as a reporter and editor before taking over the company’s leadership reins at a time when its fortunes were at their lowest ebb.

According to a statement by the organisers of DAME on Wednesday, media professionals and the public have the 31st edition of the annual awards to look up to when Osinubi will be honoured alongside others on Sunday.

Two other journalists, Messrs Ted Iwere and Dotun Oyelade, will also receive the DAME honorary fellowships for sustained involvement in the media.

It also said 15 media houses would vie for honours at the 2022 edition of the Diamond Awards for Media Excellence.

According to DAME, it will be the 31st presentation of the esteemed award programme, established in 1991 to enhance professionalism in the media by rewarding talent and enterprise.

“Prizes will be given in such areas of media work as reporting, commentary, and design.  Established to encourage media professionalism by rewarding talent and enterprise, the annual exercise has been acknowledged as living up to this promise,” the statement read in part.

Aside from honouring individuals and organisations with career-boosting recognitions, the awards provide media scholars and professionals, policy formulators, and regulators with the welcome annual feedback on the state of media practice.

In all, 39 nominations have been made in 13 categories from which will emerge overall winners in the Newspaper and Editor of the Year categories. The breakdown of the nominations shows that of the 15 media houses shortlisted, two account for 15 nominations, three have 10 nominations amongst them, while 10 organisations account for the remaining ten nominations.

Augustine Eguavoen Did A Fine Job As Super Eagles Coach

By now it is no news to any Nigerian sports fan, that Augustin Eguavoen and his entire team have been relieved of their duties at the helm of affairs of the Nigerian National team. Most Nigerians are happy with this development, with some claiming that his immediate predecessor, Gernot Rohr would have delivered better results. However, a simple analysis of events will clearly demonstrate that Eguavoen did a fine enough job given the circumstances. I will attempt to undertake this analysis by demonstrating, first that Eguavoen has a better record than one might realize, and secondly by comparing the performance of his Super Eagles with that of Afcon winners, Senegal, and runners-up Egypt. When Gernot Rohr was sacked a few weeks to the Afcon, knowledgeable sportspersons decried the move, citing the difficulty any new coach would face in setting up the team to play to his own patterns. In analyzing Eguavoen, therefore, it must first be understood that the new boss was operating unde...
