Gender violence: Women groups record 1000 FCT cases

The Association of Wives of Traditional Rulers and the Broad Sustainable Women Economic Empowerment & Peace Initiative have revealed there are over a thousand reported cases of Sexual and Gender-Based violence in the Federal Capital Territory.

The groups stated this at a joint press conference held at the palace of the Gomo of Kuje, in Abuja on Thursday, as part of events to kick off the 16 days of activism to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

According to its Baseline Study on ‘The Prevalence of SGBV In FCT’, “Some area councils are suspected to possess only the data of cases reported directly to them. Having said that, Gwagwalada reported the highest number of 900 SBGV, followed by Kwali (121), Abuja Municipal (22), Abaji (12) and Bwari (five) respectively; for instance, traditional rulers received most complaints in Kwali (25), while the social welfare department received most complaints in Gwagwalada (900).”

The General Secretary of the AWTR, Halima Mohammed, who delivered the joint statement, revealed that the groups had set up hotlines in the palaces of the traditional rulers of the FCT, to receive one-on-one case reports through the wives of the traditional rulers at the community level. She added that the groups would take its campaigns to schools in the FCT, to sensitise women and girls to end school-related violence against women and girls.

“We have made available a dedicated hotline for a one-on-one case report to the palace through the traditional rulers’ wives. The chief and council will be informed about your case for hearing. The chief wives are trained to follow your case to logical conclusion within the justice system, so you can get justice. There is a growing recognition that there can be no serious solution to the fight against the SGBV among indigenous people, without strengthening the traditional justice system.

“In the course of this year’s 16 days of activism, the Traditional Rulers Wives, in collaboration with B-SWEEP, will take the campaign to schools in Kuje and AMAC to sensitise the students and teachers to end school-related violence against women and girls. We will make media rounds to advocate for this course.”

Meanwhile, the Director of B-SWEEP and wife of the former governor of Bauchi State, Hajia Hadiza Abubakar, explained that the cases received at the palaces were referred to the appropriate authorities where it could not be resolved by the Chief and council.

“Every palace has its own unique way of treating this issue, though depending on the nature of the case. If it’s a case that can be handled at the palace, we handle it. But those that are beyond the palace, we refer it to the relevant authorities, either to the police or other authorities, depending on the weight of the case.”

The groups called on the governments, civil societies and the private sector to lend voices for the improvement of the traditional justice system, to effectively combat gender-based violence among the poor indigenous people.

They also called on grassroots initiatives to work with traditional leaders rather than against them, to achieve zero-violence against women and girls, and enjoined community inhabitants to jointly “prevent violence everywhere, from conflict zones to people’s homes, as we work to beat SGBV in Nigeria.”

Augustine Eguavoen Did A Fine Job As Super Eagles Coach

By now it is no news to any Nigerian sports fan, that Augustin Eguavoen and his entire team have been relieved of their duties at the helm of affairs of the Nigerian National team. Most Nigerians are happy with this development, with some claiming that his immediate predecessor, Gernot Rohr would have delivered better results. However, a simple analysis of events will clearly demonstrate that Eguavoen did a fine enough job given the circumstances. I will attempt to undertake this analysis by demonstrating, first that Eguavoen has a better record than one might realize, and secondly by comparing the performance of his Super Eagles with that of Afcon winners, Senegal, and runners-up Egypt. When Gernot Rohr was sacked a few weeks to the Afcon, knowledgeable sportspersons decried the move, citing the difficulty any new coach would face in setting up the team to play to his own patterns. In analyzing Eguavoen, therefore, it must first be understood that the new boss was operating unde...

The expense of medications and examination of diabetes have represented an extraordinary test as more than two third of the number of inhabitants in the patients can't bear to purchase the medications and check themselves consistently which most times prompted confusions and, in some cases, passings. This was the situation of Racheal Utom, a 38-year-old woman who lost her passed on appendage to type 2 diabetes and was nearly losing the right a year later, because of her failure to stringently buy her medications and lead her examinations. Mrs Utom, who is engaging with diabetes mellitus, said the specialist told her a month prior that her five toes have been contaminated and right now rotted, yet they were making an effort not to remove the excess appendage. Utom, who uncovered that there w...
