UPU loses foremost woman leader at 95

The Urhobo Progress Union, UPU, foremost Urhobo sociocultural group has lost one of its foremost women leaders, Chief (Mrs.) Lady Agbaza, nee Jedia who passed on at 95. The sad news was broken yesterday in Warri by the family spokesperson, Mr Benson Jefia in a press release. 50-year-old bomb manufacturer discovered and arrested in Imo

The Imo State Police Command on Friday said it arrested and paraded a 50-year-old-man, one Simeon Onigbo, suspected to be a bomb manufacturer for gunmen used in attacking police stations and government facilities in the state. The State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Micheal Abattam, disclosed this to newsmen in Owerri. The command said it on Wednesday uncovered and raided the bomb manufacturing camp at Uba Umuaka in Njaba Local Government Area of Imo State, based on the credible information that was made available to the Police. 20 killed in Benue villages as herders invade communities in two LGAs

At least 20 persons have been reportedly killed in what appeared another coordinated attack on Benue communities in Waya, Jato-Aka, Turan and villages in Mbabuande and Mbapa Council Wards of Kwande and Gwer West Local Areas of the state respectively. Sad news: The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, joins ancestors at 83

THE Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, last night joined his ancestors. He was 83 years old and the longest reigning Alaafin ever, having ruled for over 52 years. Oba Lamidi, the third from the Alowodu Ruling House, joined his ancestors at the Afe Babalola University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti in Ekiti State. His remains were said to have been moved to Oyo town in the earliest part of Saturday and were received at Idi-Igba by his first son, Prince Tunde and his other siblings. Police arrest assailant who killed mother, daughter for calling him ‘useless’

Scientists allay fears of new Covid wave, say cases rising but focus on hospital admissions

NAF aircraft crashes in Kaduna, many feared dead

A military aircraft belonging to the Nigerian Airforce, NAF, has crashed in Kaduna state with many officers on board reportedly killed. Recall that last year a military aircraft conveying the former Chief of Army Staff, Ibrahim Attahiru, and 10 others crashed, killing all the officers onboard including the Army Chief. According to a source, it was a Super Mushak, which is trainer aircraft that crashed inside the Nigerian Airforce facility in Kaduna, while on a training mission. Eleven months ago, Ibrahim Attahiru, Chief of Army Staff, and 10 other military officers died in a NAF’s Beechcraft 350, which crashed around the Kaduna International Airport in Kaduna. In fact, between August 29, 2015, and 2021, Nigeria had suffered 11 military plane crashes with no fewer than 33 military officers perishing. The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has applauded the improvement in cargo and ship dwell time at the Lagos Ports. The minister who gave the commendation at the inauguration of “Operation Free The Ports’ And Terminals Corridors” to be handled by the Port Standing Task Team (PSTT) comprising stakeholders in the maritime industry. The Director-General of the Standard Organisation of Nigeria, SON, Farouk Salim, has said that the nation’s economy is suffering from high levels of importation of sub-standard goods into the country. The SON boss said this at a stakeholders’ sensitisation forum held in Lagos with the theme “Standards Save Lives, Grow Economy.” Salim noted that the country cannot survive if importers continue with the level of sub-standard goods shipped into the country. The condition of pensioners in Abia State is very pathetic, as the senior citizens lament 37 months of unpaid pension arrears, amidst increasing untimely deaths of colleagues over frustrating living conditions due to lack of money to meet their basic needs. How 66-year-old Nigerian professor allegedly attempted to rape graduating female student

A 25-year-old female student of Linguistics and African Language department, Faculty of Arts at the  Obafemi Awolowo University   (OAU), Ile-Ife, South-west Nigeria, Hannah Bababunmi, has accused a 66-year-old professor of Yoruba Language in the department, Joseph Opefeyitimi, of sexually harassing her, and subjecting her to physical and emotional torture. Bloody Easter as Many were killed by gunmen/military clash in Imo state

Many people were feared killed on Sunday when gunmen attacked Ihioma Community in Orlu Local Government Area of  Imo State ,  Nigeria’s South-east. There have been two contrasting narratives about the killings. While some say the killings were done by the gunmen, others accuse the Nigerian military of targeting civilians in retaliatory attacks on the gunmen. The second narrative led to the hashtag #OrluIsBleeding which trended on Twitter on Monday and early Tuesday. The gunmen, believed to be members of ESN, the militant wing of the outlawed  Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) , were said to be on a manhunt for members of Ebubeagu Security Network, who reportedly arrived in the area last Saturday. “They killed so many people. It started while we were in the church, but we had to run back home,” Ms Agu said. A Facebook user,  Success Obum , who posted a video clip of the incident, described the attack as heartbreaking.
